It’s one of my favorite parts of the day and the very first that I walk into. The bride is putting the final touches on her hair and makeup up and the groom is being jostled around by friends. Each in their own way getting ready for the big moment to see each other for the first time! Whether that be down the aisle or during a first look, regardless of how you choose to see each other, there are many things that can make your getting ready photos as outstanding as they can be! In my promise to help give you the best, I have decided that every now and then I will give you a bridal tip or two to make your day go even smoothly and more beautiful than you could have imagined. So here we go……!
Natural Light: It’s the most beautiful light you can photograph with. If possible, choose to get dressed in a room that has plenty of windows and great light flowing in. A great way to combat those fluorescent lights are to get ready in an upstairs room that has large windows, such as a hotel room for example. If you choose to get ready in your home, find the best lit room in the house…even if it’s the bathroom!
Light Meal: There are times where brides or grooms are too nervous to eat before the big moment. This is all too important and I will say it over and over, make sure there is something to eat! In the past I have seen sandwich trays, crackers and cheese, or fruit spreads. The long and short of it, just be sure that there is something available for you and your bridal party to eat. Never fails on a hot day to see one or two bridal party members get a little ‘woozy’ at the alter. Make sure water and hydrating fluids are also present!
Preparation: After everyone has their hair and makeup done for the ladies and showers for the gents, be sure to clean up your space. This allows for no clutter in the back of your photos as well as having everything ready to grab after the ceremony is over. If possible place all of your bags back in your vehicle or in a pile ready for the limo or party bus when it arrives!
Details: When I arrive I take a few minutes to say hello both to the bride and the groom to let you know I am present. Shortly after, my assistant of the day and I are darting around capturing all those details you put into your day. We like to capture the church or ceremony site, your dress, the rings, flowers, programs, and any other special mementos. So don’t forget to have all of the above with you for portraits!
Unique Ideas: Other than making sure all of those items are ready and available at your getting ready location, think about a few more unique details to make your day special! One of my favorites are custom made ..Dress Hangers.. with your future name woven in the wire. Another, having your ring bearer or flower girl carry a ..Here Comes The Bride Sign.., how adorable is that? Or how about a change up? I have seen brides wear a veil for the ceremony and then replace it with a ..Floral Headpiece.. to accent the evening! Guys, what about a pair of ..Converse Shoes.. to replace those uncomfortable rents?
The possibilities are endless! I can’t wait to see what you come up with for your special day!
